The Huhu

They say that good things take time. If that is the case then this must be the best album ever because it took us so long to finish the damn thing that I'm quite embarrassed to admit just how long it took. Then I should be embarrassed since it was me who said "oh, I wouldn't mind doing a couple of little guitar overdubs" and then taking at least a year to produce said overdubs. Ok, it wasn't as bad as Chinese Democracy or the follow up to Loveless but it still took longer than it should have. To our defence it is a double album of the nicest recordings we ever did and it is beautifully packaged in a very unique lazer cut acrylic case designed by Mr Simon Waterfield and hand assembled by the band members.
By the end of 2009, Brett and his family had made the decision that they would be leaving Wellington which meant The Huhu would be coming to an end. We decided that we should attempt to record our many unrecorded songs for posterity, and so the last thing The Huhu did was hit the studio to record EVERYTHING! The Album was mostly recorded by Dan Beban at Fred's, an old church on Frederick Street in Wellington which sadly had to be vacated as it is an earthquake risk. The basic tracking for 11 songs was done in a single day, vocals were all done in another session that took about 4 hours. All was going great until the fucking guitarist decided to 'do a few overdubs at home' then we decided to get someone to do some keyboard tracks and about a year later we were actually ready to start mixing it. Skip forward six or seven months and it was mixed and we were ready to master it . Skip forward another few months and we were ready to start on the artwork. See how these things happen?
A few of the tracks were recorded by us in the office space we used to practice in above Wholly Bagels on Willis Street and had been sitting around for even longer. Both of the spaces that we recorded in had a lot of height and volume and were quite lively which gave the recordings a nice feel, despite the lack of any analogue recording equipment.
